The Rio Grande City Public Library has the honor being the first public library in the Rio Grande Valley to have a special collections related to the South Texas Borderlands outside of an academic library. It has over 300 titles in its catalog about South Texans or written by South Texans.
In Fall of 2023, Rio Grande City Public Library was awarded a $2500 Collections Enhancement Grant by the Texas Book Festival. These funds were used to launch a special collection to explore the history, culture, and heritage of the Rio Grande Valley.

The Rio Grande City Public Library has collected over 300 titles in its Borderlands Collection including its latest addition from the Texas Book Festival. The collection is expansive and includes works of non-fiction, fiction, poetry, memoirs, juvenile literature, and graphic novels.
